One Direction may be huge already, but now they are to be supersized. The unlikely director of a new, official film about the band is Morgan Spurlock, who made his name with the Oscar-nominated Super Size Me in 2004, in which he investigated the health effects of fast food by eating nothing but McDonald's for a month.
The
new film won't be a hard-hitting exposé of the commercial machinations
that have made One Direction international stars, however, but a 3D
feature film blending concert material and behind-the-scenes footage of
the blockbuster British boy band, to be released next summer.
Spurlock will also produce the movie, working alongside Ben Winston, Adam Milano and Simon Cowell,
whose X Factor series brought One Direction to the world. "Morgan is
the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look
into what it's like to be One Direction today," Cowell said.
This
statement belies the unusual choice of Spurlock for a 3D popumentary;
the 42-year-old is best known for making documentaries about himself.
"This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the
band," Spurlock said. "To capture this journey and share it with
audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud
to be a part of."
One Direction first spoke about the film
during an appearance on NBC's Today Show. It was reportedly the biggest
concert in Today Show history, with 15,000 fans packed into New York's
Rockefeller Plaza. Since forming as part of X Factor's 2010 series, the
band have sold more than 13m records, topping the charts in the UK and breaking a Billboard record in the US. They released their second album this week.
One Direction's 3D film will be released by TriStar Pictures on 30 August 2013.
